Huntsville is located between Houston and Dallas on Interstate 45 (I-45). It was home to Sam Houston a prominent Texan who's name now graces the State University there and a 67' statue and complex constructed to honor him. The Oakwood Cemetery is the burial site for Sam Houston along with other notable Texas personalities and pioneers. Be sure to visit the Huntsville State Park, the HEARTS Veteran Museum and the Texas Prison Museum - home to 'Old Sparky'.
Other activities abound in and around Huntsville. The Blue Lagoon - an old rock quarry - is fed by artesian springs; perfect for scuba diving. Designated 'A Texas Main Street City', the old downtown buildings now house antique shops, restaurants and arts/crafts stores. And don't miss the Gibbs-Powell House for a look at Greek Revival style architecture. Located in the Piney Woods of East Texas with the city being the northwestern boundary of the Sam Houston National Forest, outside activities are unlimited. Hunstville State Park - over 2,000 acres in the Sam Houston National Forest - offers camping, boating, fishing, swimming and botany trails.
